Male‐specific mortality biases secondary sex ratio in Eurasian tree sparrows Passer montanus

Sex allocation theory predicts that parents bias the offspring sex ratio strategically. In avian species, the offspring sex ratio can be biased at multiple growth stages, although the mechanisms are not well known. It is crucial to reveal a cause and timing of biased offspring sex ratio. We investigated (i) offspring sex ratio at multiple growth stages, from laying to fledging; and (ii) the sta...

Adaptive Secondary Sex Ratio Adjustments via Sex-Specific Infanticide in a Bird

Infanticide is easiest to understand when it involves killing the offspring of others [1], but a parent may also kill its own offspring if the sacrifice of currently dependent young leads to higher survival of brood mates [2] or an improvement in the parent's likely future reproduction [3]. However, sex-specific infanticide by parents of their own offspring, although occurring in some human soc...

Sex ratio biases in termites provide evidence for kin selection.

Inclusive fitness theory, also known as kin selection theory, is the most general expansion of Darwin's natural selection theory. It is supported by female-biased investment by workers in the social Hymenoptera where relatedness to sisters is higher than to brothers because of haplodiploidy. However, a strong test of the theory has proven difficult in diploid social insects because they lack su...

Gonadotrophin and the human secondary sex ratio.

A review of published reports showed that the sex ratio (proportion of boys) was low among infants conceived after ovulation had been induced. The difference between the observed sex ratio and an expected one of 0 . 514 was highly significant. These findings suggest that maternal gonadotrophin concentrations at the time of conception directly affect the sex of the zygote.
